I Am Coeur d’Alene’s Go-To Company For Pellet Stove Troubleshooting, Service, Installation & Repair
At Armour Chimney Service, I specialize in pellet stove cleaning and repairs and have earned the NFI Pellet Specialist Certification. Need a new pellet stove installed? I can help you out. Need your pellet stove cleaned? I can help you out with that, too.
Pellet stoves burn pelletized fuel, usually wood shavings that are forced through an extruder, which makes wood pellets that look much like rabbit food. These pellets are stored in a hopper on the stove, from which they are fed, usually by an auger system, into a burn pot located in the combustion chamber. The pellets are lit with an ignitor or lit manually, and as they burn, the stoves are force-fed combustion air with a combustion fan, and mechanically exhausted using an exhaust fan.
Most pellet stoves have a convection fan, which pushes room air through ducts or channels to heat exchange tubes, which then heat the air before it’s blown back out into the room.
Pellet stoves are popular appliances for many reasons:
- Their use of natural, environmentally friendly pellets (which are made of recycled wood waste)
- Their ease of use and convenience
- Their long burn times and highly efficient, clean burn
- Their ability to heat large spaces quietly
- 40 pound sacks of pellets are clean, easy to handle, and easy to store.
Add pellets, flip a switch to turn the appliance on, set the heat, and you’re good to go. But like any appliance, a pellet stove needs regular maintenance and may need to be repaired or replaced at times.
Troubleshooting & Repairs
Common pellet stove problems can include the following:
- issues with the electric hopper that feeds fuel to the appliance
- damage to other electrical components
- a dirty, poorly installed, or otherwise problematic attached venting system
Likewise, you may experience things like starter issues, stove shutdown, soot buildup, and smoke problems. Pellet stove augers can get bound up and burn out the auger motor. Neglected pellet stove exhaust fans can become clogged or encrusted with debris and fail. Any and all of these should be investigated by an experienced and certified chimney professional.
I’ll start by cleaning the pellet stove and the attached venting system and looking for signs of damage. I’ll use my proven diagnostics and testing to pinpoint where the issue lies, so I can confidently and effectively fix the problem. I won’t just throw parts and repairs at the problem — I’ll make sure I know what’s causing the problem before I suggest repairs, saving you time and money.
Service
Pellet stoves need regular service and ongoing maintenance to keep problems at bay. For starters, you’ll want to make sure you’re scheduling your annual inspections with a CSIA-certified chimney professional every year. You’ll also want to schedule sweepings on a regular basis. Routine, simple maintenance like this can keep your pellet stove working as safely and as efficiently as it should — for as long as it should.
When servicing your pellet stove, I’ll adjust the settings to ensure you’re getting the best performance out of your pellet stove. I’ll also clean and lubricate any components that need it and clean the attached venting system and the ash traps. Need to have damaged parts replaced or seals or gaskets replaced? I’ll take care of that for you, too. From the routine maintenance that’s outlined in the stove manufacturer’s owner’s manual to special care, I do it all.
The only “chore” for you the homeowner, is to keep the hopper filled and do some simple daily, weekly, and seasonal maintenance, like emptying the ash pan, cleaning the burn pot, cleaning the glass doors, and removing dust buildup from the hopper and auger tube. and cleaning the stove and chimney.
Installation
Looking to add or replace a pellet stove? I can help with that as well. I am a NFI-Certified Pellet Specialist and I know just what it takes to ensure a properly installed, high performing pellet stove. I’ll follow manufacturer’s instructions to the letter and check the appliance to make sure nothing was missed or done incorrectly. When I am finished, your new pellet stove will be ready to go so you can prop up your feet and relax.
I also sell and install stove pipe, so if you’re adding a pellet stove and don’t yet have the venting system needed, I can help. My stove pipe is beautiful, safe, and highly efficient, and with its lifetime warranty, you won’t have to worry about replacing it any time soon.
